John Gruber's Layer 1 Commentary

The Chief

The tone of Layer Tennis is a little different in the playoffs. The whole sport is as much a joint performance -- design improv -- as it is competition. In the postseason, though, we tend to see a little more gamesmanship, a little more competitive spirit. Nothing along the lines of Vince Lombardi's "Winning isn't everything, it's the only thing", but I think even Coach Lombardi might like this serve.

War. Greg's army on the left, Noper's on the right.

And a groovy skeletal Indian chief sporting designer eyeglasses in the middle. An evocative, spirited start to the match.

One thing I've noticed, looking back at Hubacek's previous LT matches, is that he often mimics his opponents' styles. For one thing, it shows he's a versatile artist. But competitively, I think he often throws his opponents off-balance, by getting right in this face on design turf they expected to have to themselves.

Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by John Gruber.
