Beauty

Did I say we went red? I meant yellow, of course.

Volley 9 is always a tough play. It’s the last shot of the match for the server, but not the final shot of the match. How do you end when you’re not the ending?

You do it by bringing things home from earlier in the match. We’re back to Hume, back to Gotham, back to the brain.

And we’re back to philosophical questions about beliefs and facts. Is beauty a fact — an attribute possessed by a thing or person? Or is it a belief, an opinion in one's mind? We know where Hume (and, presumably, Thomas stand). This is a great recovery from what I think was the one and only wobbly volley of the match.

The yellow background is so striking, but I love how the text, in white, is so subtle. It gives the quote an ephemeral quality that befits its message.

It’s a lovely play overall. It feels like a final shot, but not the final shot. Thomas has closed off his play, and the themes he’s brought into the match, but hasn’t attempted to box Weaver into any sort of corner for the match finale — it’s wide open where Weaver can take this from here. A gentlemanly volley that befits the cooperative tone of this match.

Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by John Gruber.
