Kings. Veterans. Knights. Titans. Experts. Moguls. Rulers. Icons. Alright, let's just state the obvious: these are Old Dudes of the industry.
If you've been around the web for a while, chances are you've run across the work of this edition's combatants Joshua Davis and Brendan Dawes. Both began as early pioneers on the web, both continued to innovate over the last 10+ years. Both have enormous client lists with the biggest companies imaginable. Both are still killing it today in the industry.
This is going to be an awesome battle, one you could say is over fifteen years in the making.
Brendan Dawes is the Creative Director for magneticNorth and boasts well over 10 years of innovation with Flash. He's also done interesting art projects at museums such as MoMA and continues to push the medium in new realms such as his latest iPhone app for news discovery and the excellent and handy Movie Peg.
Joshua Davis needs almost no introduction. Seriously, I can just throw words out like "praystation" and "dreamless" and chances are if you are in possession of a stray gray hair, you know exactly what I'm talking about. For those of you born into a world that always had broadband, Joshua Davis was an early pioneer of Flash and later pushed the envelope of what was possible using ActionScript, the internal scripting language within Flash. I saw him speak several years ago when he was first unveiling his scripts to generate Art. Lately he's been working on the HYPE framework (with Brenden Hall) to allow others to learn and innovate with ActionScript.
Simply put, both guys have been around forever, have done everything, and speak at every conference, but still kick ass everyday and are both far from retired. I'm on pins and needles waiting for the opening gun blast on this edition of Layer Tennis and can't wait to see what sorts of things they'll come up with. Joshua Davis won the virtual coin toss and will be going first. You can follow along on the Twitter Crowd page and participate by tagging your tweets with a #LYT hashtag.
Matt Haughey is also an old dude on the web though he's long forgotten what it's like to write new code and layout new designs everyday.
Congratulations to Mig Reyes, Layer Tennis Season 3 Champion.
Thanks to all the players, commentators and fans who made Season Three of Layer Tennis a big success. Cast your votes on The Championship Match. Both Finalists will receive invitations to play in the post-season tournament for Season Four.
Here's how the voting works. Decide who you'd like to declare as winner and then simply tweet their first name following a hash mark.
