Video Editing Match Preview

Trim and Assemble

Yet another experiment. One bin of elements, two pro video editors, fifteen minutes each. Live on Friday, the 26th at 2pm Chicago time.

We’ve had designers, illustrators, typographers, motion graphics artists, and seemingly every other feasible type of creative types play rounds of Layer Tennis. Except for one: film and video editors. We’ve talked about it since Tennis’ inception, how exactly that would work. It's a bit more of a logistical puzzle, first on the technical side, like keeping clip bins sorted and passing back and forth EDLs (edit lists), and then with the actual function of taking this usually very methodical and deliberate process and compressing it into 15 minute chunks. What would it look like? We had no idea. Could it work? We're about to find out.

We’ve asked editors Josh Bodnar from The Whitehouse’s Chicago office (his work ranges from spots for Guinness to an Emmy win for his edit of the opening of Dexter) and Jason Uson (Budweiser, AT&T, Lowes) from Beast’s Austin location to play this inaugural match. So they have something to work off of, we've given them 10 gigs of chopped up clips from archival footage found at Archive.org and random footage we had laying around the office, a large assortment of full music tracks and miscellaneous loops, a bin full of an oddball assortment of sound effects, and just to round out the collection, a bunch of photos and vector illustrations. We’ve spent the week figuring out all the tech details, tests have been run, hard drives have been FedExed from Austin to Chicago and back again, and now we're about to see what happens.

Layer By Layer Commentary

Keith Phipps will be providing the live, layer-by-layer commentary for this match. Keith writes, "I’m a pop culture-focused critic and editor who’s written thousands of reviews and edited many more. If you’ve read me, it was probably in The A.V. Club, the entertainment section of The Onion." We’re pretty sure Keith has never reviewed anything quite like this before, or on such a tight deadlines either.
