The Case Rests

Now, ladies and gentlemen, we're cooking with gas. Smithson rises to the challenge and fires an opening robot shot that's somehow cute, funny, and not a little unsettling, all at the same time.

I love the art direction; the super-focused colour palette sets the tone uncompromisingly, while the animation adds just enough depth to mess with the flatness of the illustration. And there are maps! Polygons! Robots shouting fuzz! It's like a bunch of youves had a party while their mum was out shopping and she came home to discover the house in disarray. It's kind of doing my head in. Should probably stop watching it on loop.

But wait, there's more. You may have noticed that these movements also sound. Speakers up! For that we can thank Shervin Shaeri, a British Iranian composer who very kindly supplied the guys with a library of music and sfx to animate against. If this first volley is indicative of what is to come, the outlook predicts lots more unnerving electro that will define the course of the match more than you might expect.

Smithson worked on this for quite a while I bet, then he handed it off to Oeffinger who has been at it for most of the day. He needs to be done in just about 90 minutes. Tell us what you think on Twitter by adding #lyt to your tweet and checking in with the The Crowd.

This is some pistols at dawn type behaviour. I can't wait to see what Oeffinger comes up with in response.

Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Jason Koxvold.
