Boys ‘n’ Buried Jam

As our intrepid type designers start getting glyphic in today‘s match, a question immediately springs to mind. Can a lowly FontLab file — quietly lingering in the background — provide our boys with an adequate creative workspace? They‘re certainly not limited by talent or tools, simply by the time on the clock. Creating a typeface from scratch is one thing, but attempting to do so during the course of a match is unprecedented. I wish them luck, but they may not need it. We can see that Mark Simonson has started off with a minimal character set packing some premium punch.

Out of the entire Unicode macrocosm, Mark selected a simple trio of characters and made them his own. A trio of characters that actually spell something. So far, I‘m impressed ... especially since this face is sporting two of my favourite typographic traits ... the bones of a straightforward geometric sans, and bulbous accoutrements sensuously oozing out of the em-square.

However ... this might be jelly, ‘cause jam don‘t kern like that.
