When I first saw this image in the green room, I LOL'd. For real. I think we may have discovered the match's middle ground here as Draplin retreats from Middle Earth.
Your humble commentator made several remarks about Potts' sartorial choices in the last volley's commentary -- it was bascially filler...Coudal makes me write a certain number of words per round and if I don't fill my quota, I don't get paid, and I'd really like to get paid, like really really really -- but Draplin apparently took those comments to heart and really Went There w/r/t Potts' cheapo suit.[1]
And speaking of something completely different...
I wanted to take a moment to inform the audience just how difficult Layer Tennis is from the perspective of the competitors. It seems hard, right? YOU HAVE NO IDEA.
Although I've never competed myself, this is my third time doing the commentary on an LT match and even that is tough. For one thing, you can't go to the bathroom...for three hours. You're too busy. At the 1:45 mark, your eyes are bloodshot and watery from staring at the screen so intently. At three hours in, you're emotionally, physically, and mentally drained.
When I was a young web designer, I competed in a contest to design an entire web site in a few hours. By the end of it, I felt as though all of my life's juice had been sucked out of my dried husk of a body. It was the most difficult thing I've ever done as a professional. But Layer Tennis is much worse. This 15 minute thing...it's an absolute killer. Literally zero time for thinking or reflecting, the things that make good design good. I don't know how these guys and girls do it, but I'm glad they do.
[1] I know nothing about suits. It may in fact be an expensiveo suit.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Jason Kottke.
