Rosecrans Baldwin's Layer 4 Commentary

Pourquoi, fish? Pourquoi pas!

Some movies you never forget. Others you actively discourage people from watching because they are cancerous. Let me explain.

Lists are fun. Here are some lists:

Top three movies I love and why

1) The General: Perfect comedy; 2) The Last Picture Show: Perfect drama; 3) Ghostbusters: Plain perfect.

Top three things I love about Chris's volley and why

1) Continuity: He stays in the frame Greg designed, and takes it a step further; 2) Simplicity: a pencil, a diamond, and a trio of fish. 3) Mystery: Why the fish? Who cares? Chris is a gentleman and leaves a lot of room (and motifs) for Greg to use.

Top three movies I dislike and why

1. Rushmore: Sorry, on the fly I couldn't think of two others, and yes, I realize it's considered a contemporary treasure, but please -- aside from the set design and all that cheek? Rushmore marks the point when (after the wonderful Bottle Rocket) Wes Anderson picked art directing over directing, preferring style to substance.

Top thing I dislike about Chris's volley and why

1. A sense of enh: Which is to say, he didn't do much here. There's not a whole lot to look at and/or enjoy. Then again, he only had 15 minutes to work with, but still: enh.

So, is the match going downhill? Are we slowing to tedium, or will Greg return with thrills? Wait and see.

Also, I had it pointed out to me backstage that Greg's spinning logo in the last frame was meant to be the one tossed discus-like from Chris's earlier volley. Doesn't change my opinion much, but it does show that Greg wasn't dissing continuity as completely as I suggested.
