Let me start by telling you about a dream I had recently. I was with a friend of mine in a country house and she wasn’t wearing pants. No, wait. Wrong note card. Not that dream.
The dream I mean is one about Mexican wrestling. I'm not exactly a fan--I have seen Nacho Libre, but only about three-quarters of it--still there I was, a few nights ago, dreaming about Mexican wrestlers. In the dream, the guys fighting were named "Otto" and "Captain Cesar." I was sitting ringside. An old woman who looked kind of like Golda Meir was sitting next to me, and I was displeased until I suddenly realized that she was my dream date. Not my ideal date, but my date in my dream.
I raise this only to raise a second point: I was gobsmacked when I saw that Armin Vit's serve in this Layer Tennis match was a series of illustrations based on Mexican wrestling holds. What he has done, quite cleverly, is to take common typographic terms and illustrate them with wrestling moves. This is a great start. I love the quality of the paper, or at least the illusion of quality on the fake electronic paper.
I have only two concerns, which is not to say complaints. First, why aren't all the pairs of wrestlers the same two guys? It would help me to get involved in all the arm-stretching and back-bending. Second: Armin, isn't it your responsibility as a designer and a violent man to find a wrestilng analogue for widows and orphans? But again, nice work, and this gives us another sports metaphor as we ring out round one.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Ben Greenman.
