I’m sitting in Jim Coudal’s office, reading a book that he left on his desk before heading off to SXSW called Double Duty Nurse about a vacationing and sexy RN who’s called into the local ER to help a handsome doctor operate on a sexy but gored rodeo cowboy when the first volley is ready to view.
In my preview I mentioned that any straight line in Phineas's work always seems threatening, and sure enough he's started the match off with a threat. Bared fangs, sharp talons, a ready samurai with a sword in each fist. It's beautifully rendered and, perhaps most importantly for the purposes of Layer Tennis, it holds tremendous narrative potential. Phiineas is so far working in charcoals and colored pencils, though he has other weapons in his bag.
For the first two volleys this match are being played on the Exquisite Corpse model. We're covering up Phineas's serve and Dan will create his return on the right side of the canvas without having seen Dan's initial illustration. In the third volley Phineas will work exclusively on Dan's side. In the fourth, Dan will attack Phineas's serve. After that it's a no-holds-barred Hell-In-A-Cell fire match with Texas rules and Haitian laws.
Since we're all in one location this week, we're adding some video extras throughout the afternoon. While you await the next volley you can watch pre-match interview segments with me, Phineas (1, 2, 3), and Dan (1, 2), and a short film on the construction of the making of the filming of the first ever analog Layer Tennis Match.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Kevin Guilfoile.
