Weighing in at nearly a minute, Digital Kitchen Chicago slams their last layer across the net and throws up a sign.
Hyper-nostalgia reigned supreme tonight. Starting with a look back to the ancient Egyptians, progressing rapidly to the 1980s and then referencing earlier rounds in the competition, this Layer Tennis competition has been all about appropriating the past (distant and otherwise) for the sake of a little mograph fun.
In this spirit, DK's final layer sums up the entire match with an orderly collage before breaking free from the monitor (literally and figuratively) to roam backwards through the DK Chicago office, narrowly avoiding its semi-bearded denizens and their child-safe weaponry. It's a poignant and playful exclamation point on what has proven to be an incredibly entertaining collaborative story.
Both Werk and Digital Kitchen Chicago deserve massive props for a great match. They even managed to use a sizable chunk of the Production Premium suite in the course of their 10 grueling layers. Given a few more minutes, I'm sure one of them would have eventually busted out InDesign for... something.
Okay, enough love. Who do you think is the winner? Twitter your decision and make sure to include either #werk (for Werk) or #dkc (for Digital Kitchen Chicago) in it.
Also, make sure to and come back next week for the next live match: two illustrators playing ON PAPER. Crazy.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Justin Cone.
