Looking at this volley, this is what I like to imagine. That in the background he have a cast of potential characters, each just waiting to be written. An author has selected one to begin with, a young girl, and begun her composition. He scrawls the first words of her biography and she becomes more distinct, stands out from the rest. The others look on with a twinge of envy, but they trust that their creation draws near. The author will summon them each in turn.
Not a bad analogy for our match today, really. The creation of a layer is an enterprise unto itself, but each preceding volley serves as a kind of midwife, helping it into the world.
Rod had the serve and thus the penultimate volley; Mitch closes. A bit of a shake-up here, as Rod largely abandons the world of text and returns to pure imagery. Will Mitch adapt and survive, or get thrown off his game?
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Matthew Baldwin.
