Matthew Baldwin's Layer 8 Commentary

A Yearning for Kerning

Confession: I am not a font nerd. I totally should be, I fall right into the target demographic: male, work in IT, get obsessed with little details. But you know that movie Helvetica? Where the graphic designers extol the virtues of various fonts as if each cured a different strain of tuberculosis? Bored me out of my mind. Couldn't bring myself to care.

But despite my fontignorance, I know what I like. And this I like.

I love how some of the lines travel off the page, as if this one word is part of a more elaborate structure, but we are only privy to a tiny portion of the big picture. I love that each L is its own individual. I love the multiple strokes for each line because then I can imagine that I'm at a party and have drunk so heavily that I am seeing things in triple. Dude, I am like so wasted right now.

By the way, Mitch appears to have drawn inspiration from this the 1968 Mexico Olympics logo. Fun fact: if you unfocus your eyes and look deep into that image you can see a bear riding a dolphin. Seriously, everyone can see it but you. Just try harder.

Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Matthew Baldwin.
