From Flash to the PET to an old-school radio, and now to a sharpie on a torn notebook page. We seem to be regressing, sliding backwards down the technological timeline. By volley 10 we'll be in a cave watching shadows projected on the nether wall.
There was a time when artists soldiered on in solitude, receiving no reaction to their work until a formally unveiling. But feedback is immediate in the age of the Internet, and it's well-nigh impossible to resist its temptation. I guarantee that, even as I type these words, Mitch is searching for #lyt to gauge reaction to his latest volley. You may think that your off-hand tweet is just flung into the void, but we see them. And they cut as deeply as any knife. Well, maybe not any knife. Like a really dull knife, maybe. Like a butter knife.
Mitch appears to be playing nice here, trying to bring Rod into his clique as it were. But it could be a trap. At some point I think we all received a note such as this, and found that it eventually led to heartbreak and ostracization. That that note was given to us by Holly Krummel in third-grade Social Studies. Right? That happened to everyone? Just me?
Will Rod agree to become pals, or bring the note to the teacher's attention and revel in the spectacle? His next move will tell the tale.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Matthew Baldwin.
