I like how Rod has appropriated the "pain" symbols from the previous volley and now has them emanating from a radio. Having listened to some commercial stations recently, I think that's a pretty accurate summation.
And while were were briefly unmoored from the subtext of technology, we appeared to have circled back, albeit to one that precedes any we've seen thus far. Back when the device used to play music was as central to the experience as the music itself.
These days media players have grown so small that you hardly even notice their existence--it's as if the sound travels from the ether itself, up your slender white cords and into your earbuds. But back in The Day, you could walk around with just a boombox--it didn't even need to be on--and people knew you meant business. They knew you were someone for whom music was a calling.
The speed control level in this image throws me a bit--maybe this is a specialized equipment of some sort? Or perhaps Rod is throwing down the gauntlet, daring Mitch to push that lever up. How about it gentlemen, shall we make things interesting? Maybe lower the time limits for each volley to three minutes and some change?

Tomorrow we continue our series of live, experimental Layer Tennis Exhibitions with a motion graphics match between Matt Smithson and Daniel Oeffinger. As usual, the action starts at 2pm Chicago time. Check the time in your area. What is unusual is that the match won't finish until next Thursday. We'll be posting two layers per weekday. We've always wondered what would happen if we gave a couple artists a lot more time to do each volley and this week we'll find out. Commentary is by Jason Koxvold, who knows a little something about LYT and mo-graf. Jason's Match Preview has been posted and so has the coin-flip.
