Matthew Baldwin's Layer 1 Commentary

A K.I.S.S. Hello

Imagine your typical bell-shaped curve: low on either end, a large mound in the middle, the horizontal axis labeled "Skill" and the vertical "Details". Sometime I think this describes the typical user's relationship with Photoshop.

Starting out, they just want to get the job done, and the results are necessarily stark. Then, at some point, they learn how to use all the fancy doohickeys and whatnots, and the material they produce grows exponentially more intricate, until content becomes swamped by clutter. This is the stage where they start applying lens flare to potluck fliers and digitally inserting their long dead childhood cat into family photos.

But as they master the form, they relearn a maxim that applies to pretty much every field: Keep It Simple, Stupid.

With talent to spare it must be difficult to Mr. Hunting to observe this dictum, but he does so in his first volley, giving Mitch plenty to work without overwhelming the audience.

And Great Caesar's Ghost, is that a Personal Electronic Transactor I see? How strange that a whole generation (my generation, specifically) get misty-eyed with nostalgia at the sight of a mass-produced plastic box with 4 KB of memory. And yet that's exactly how I feel about this opening salvo. It makes me want to start a nerdcore band called "The Commodores" and release an album entitled "PET Sounds". Our signature song will the theme from "Jumpman" .

The sequel to the PET was VIC-20"; will Mitch's followup be as impressive?
