One of the hazards of Layer Tennis commentary is that the players can take the commentary into their own hands. This might have been a missed opportunity for Kalmikoff. If he’s genuinely puzzled by Dawes’s last shot, and doesn’t see it how I saw it — that Dawes stuck with Flash just for the sake of sticking with Flash — Kalmikoff might have been able to do more here. I think Kalmikoff has been taken off balance by the effectiveness of his own previous volley just as much as Dawes was.

A nice touch: that’s actually an accurate facsimile of how volley #7 renders on an iPhone. But ultimately this is pushing the message as his previous volley — that Flash is old news — only less effectively. Volley 6 was hilarious, this one’s mildly amusing. And I can’t decide whether it’s an argument for or against adding Flash support to the iPhone.

Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by John Gruber.
