It all comes back to love.
This is the sort of ninja-ass coding-savant razzmatazz I’ve been expecting from Dawes. You think you’re watching static-image-file Layer Tennis and then boom he slaps an interactive animated volley at Kalmikoff. This is by no means against the rules because there are no rules.
Now we know more about our mystery man. He’s dad, in the pool, but his mind is clearly elsewhere. There’s a terrific interplay with the direction of his gaze and our lovely model on the left, and some fun tension from the fact that his eyes are covered. Poor guy can’t get a look.
Heck of a play overall, but I’m not impressed at all by the typography. Used well, there’s no finer typeface the world has ever seen than Helvetica. But used clumsily, Helvetica comes across looking generic and banal, and that’s what I’m feeling with the “I Love You” here. It’s not even quite properly aligned. The type for “Pull” seems like an afterthought as well — but these typographic nits are just a wee bit of grit on a truly spectacular play.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by John Gruber.
