Halftoned but not half-assed.
Forget the visuals for a moment and bring your attention to the type. “If It Ain’t Broke, Break It” is the title of talk that Brendan Dawes gave at the Flash on the Beach conference in 2007. That’s mind games, folks, and a clever way to put one’s opponent off balance. But it’s also an apt description of the approach Kalmikoff has taken thus far in the match. Sometimes the best way to psych out an opponent is to tell them in advance exactly what your plan is.
Visually, I like this play. Kalmikoff brings back his own halftoning theme (who says print is dead?), but sticks with the color palette from Dawes’s incoming volley. Gone is the contrast between the dark imagery and the bright colors of Kalmikoff's round 2 volley. The type is Whitney, a solid and sturdy choice.
I feel like I ought to be able to make out more of what the imagery is, but I can’t. But the effect is engaging, not frustrating. I’m figuratively drawn in but literally backing away from my monitor and squinting my eyes. Maybe it’s just my own roots in the print design world, but this shot just works.
Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by John Gruber.
