Wicked Slice

And a mystery man.

There’s a “sliced with an X-Acto blade” feel to the way Dawes has cut apart the elements here, which sort of jibes with the feel of the faux bloodstains from Kalmikoff’s incoming volley. Looks good and I love the air of mystery. Who is that man in the center? Why are his eyes blacked out? The machete-wielding hand remains, but the blade has moved out of frame. And what to make of those sharded bloodstains at top left?

Many questions. One thing I'm sure about, though, is that Dawes hasn't attempted to shift the tone back to that of his serve. He's taken the dark theme of Kalmikoff's volley and changed to color palette to match it.

Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by John Gruber.
