John Gruber's Layer 2 Commentary

Slash and Burn

What’s the deal with Chicagoans and Valentine’s Day and massacres?

Kalmikoff’s return is a little too tool-referential for my taste, revealing the Photoshop checkerboard background that underlies the layer system. But maybe there’s a method to his madness. An angry, literal stab, and a reference to the other current holiday: Friday the 13th.

The most interesting detail here are the bloodstains on what’s left of Dawes’s serve. There’s a geometry to them that makes them look like shards of something, not paper. It looks wrong for blood but feels right.

Overall I can’t help but feel that Kalmikoff was pinned by the intricacy of Dawes’s serve.

A note for those of you playing along at home: the peanut gallery has moved to Twitter for this season. Follow along with a search for the “#lyt” hashtag, and include that tag in your own tweets to join in.

Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by John Gruber.
