John Gruber's Layer 1 Commentary

Hearts and Minds

A flocking pattern.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: the two key shots in Layer Tennis are the serve (which can be prepared in advance) and the final volley (which cannot be answered). The idea is that’s what makes it fair: one player gets an advantage at the beginning, the other at the end, and it works out in the long run, even-Steven.

But maybe not. I ran the stats on last season and the players who served won 9 out of 14 matches. You nerdlingers with your slide rules are welcome to argue that that’s a mere standard deviation away from 50-50, a result you’d expect to see around one-third of the time in a fair 50-50 scenario — but back in my days as a professional gambler, that’s what we called a Solid Trend.

My theory is that a strong serve can set the tone for the entire match. And what I see here is a strong serve from Dawes.

The lines feel organic and the colors are just right for a Valentine’s Eve match. Sideline reporter / league commissioner Jim Coudal reports that Dawes generated the paths and flower-shapes with Python code and a tool called Nodebox. “Random but with rules” is how Dawes described it. It’s a tone play.

Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by John Gruber.
