Bryan Bedell's Layer 9 Commentary

Bjorn Bjoom

I’d actually forgotten until Jim just reminded me that Jose Illenberger played a Layer Tennis match way, WAY back, in the old days. Sadly, we don’t have those matches archived (someday!) but I remember it was one of the most subtle, beautiful, narrative matches ever. I love me some narrative, and honestly, that’s been the one thing missing today. It might be too late in the match to add it now.

Still, Jose has toned down the palette a bit, turned Tom Muller's rainbows into crosscut wood texture, and generally mellowed everything down to a lovely simmer. Then he gave our sweatbanded swede a dangerous case of flatulence.

Joking, of course, that's just a powerful backhand diamond blast, with a subtle threat on the left. Cool how the shape of the diamond implies motion. Jose gets it. This is the kind of beauty that can only come from being violently woken up at four in the morning with a worldwide design community calling your name. Way to answer the challenge, Jose.

We're almost there. Set your course for Singapore.

SOUNDTRACK

What's beautiful and subtle and mellow and violent? Low, of course.
