It's a technique as old as horror itself. Douche ecossaise they called it in Paris, when Le Theatre du Grand-Guignol was the reigning venue for all things macabre. The sudden shift between horror and humor--two opposing emotional "temperatures"--each heightening the effect of the other.
From the genuinely creepy, we now veer into another horror mainstay: the campy, the cheesy, the overdone. Previously I raised the possibility that Jason, for his trouble, might receive a sharp stab in the eye; instead, he received worse: the fate of watching a once terrifying franchise descend into self-parody.
But was that Brian's intent, when he crafted this image? Or did he simply layer his image atop the old, with little thought toward incorporation?
Possibly a misstep. Possibly more. Brian has one volley left. This may be his way of getting us to relax a moment. To chuckle at knowingly at ourselves. To settle back in our chairs. All to take us off our guard, before the blade of the guillotine falls.

You know how at the end of the NCAA basketball tourney CBS airs a retrospective montage? Yeah, it's sorta like that, only with better music.
