Play-By-Play Commentary

Forever And Ever, Amen

Funny, I was just thinking about this...

In preparation for this match, I read a bit about the classic horror icons. Vampires. Werewolves. Zombies. Frankenstein's Monster. One thing I noticed about all these creatures: they propagate. Vampires sire vampires. Werewolves beget werewolves. Zombies create more of their own. Even Frankenstein's monster demanded that a second be made, one he could take as a bride.

Jason was confined to a single image in this volley, but he knows what scares us. With a few deft words he conjures up not just one terror, but generations of them.

And the eye through the crack, a symbol of much of horror's allure: the voyeuristic thrill of it all. The seeing of the forbidden, the knowledge of things Man Was Not Meant To Know. The best scary stories are those that you should not be privy to, as anyone who watched an illicit Friday The 13th videotape while his parents slept blissfully in the master bedroom knows. Much of the success of Blair Witch Project is surely attributable to the documentary format, the illusion that you are watching something best left unseen.

In prematch comments, Jason revealed one of his fears is "being stabbed in the eye." How much do you want to bet that this is his eye in the image? How much do you want to bet that Brian is fishing around for an icepick, even as we speak?

Play by play commentary for this match is provided, as it happens, by Matthew Baldwin.
