Comments On The Serve

Duchamp, Via Geneva

I told you we could expect greatness. An opening worthy of Duchamp after a long booze out with James Murphy, we get a broken gold commode in an alley. A brassy dump-ster that's been snapped in half. Already I'm picking up hints of gutter humor, 21st-century luxury product irony, disco jokes, and perhaps a soupçon of Martin Parr.

Or, am I smelling a lemon? As they say, it ain't cooking if you don't put flame to the ingredients -- that's just shopping. How much work, really, did Naz put into his one big shot? Dude had 24 hours and all we got was a lousy toilet. You want a toilet? I can get you a toilet, believe me. There are ways, Dude. Hell, I can get you a toilet by 3 o'clock this afternoon... with gold enamel. These fucking amateurs...

But, no. My money says Naz thought of all of this, and is playing a true professional's gambit. A Roddick blaze of layers and pixel fonts would be too easy, too art school. This here is true Federer, the mark of a man who has played the game two million times in his sleep. Elegant, powerful, the simple Swiss touch.

Now it's up to Chris to see if he's got some Nadal-ish flair up his sleeve.
